Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing journey-level skilled work installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems and installing and maintaining lavatories, commodes, and water heaters. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location

Locations will vary from various locations in San Antonio with assignments being subject to change based on departmental needs.

Work Hours

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees and installs new plumbing, including pipes, valves, drains, basins, tubs, faucets, lavatories, sinks, drinking fountains, hot water heaters, and a wide variety of other plumbing fixtures, facilities, and equipment may require frequently lifting/carrying up to 30 pounds.

  • Supervises and performs repair of old plumbing, including fixtures and pipelines, clean and open traps, drains and other lines, hands-on work is necessary to operate plumbing tools and equipment.

  • Reviews the work of subordinate staff to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances by clearly communicating instructions.

  • Solders and repairs copper pipes.

  • Oversees and reviews the preparation of work orders.

  • Conducts estimates on time and materials required for jobs.

  • Conducts preventive maintenance on plumbing fixtures and systems.

  • Conducts annual inspections and tests.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).

  • Three (3) years of experience the plumbing trade.

  • Current Texas Journeyman Plumbers license.

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified in backflow testing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems.

  • Experience in repairing, maintaining, and replacing plumbing systems (fixtures, pipelines, traps, drains, vents, etc.)

  • Experience with backflow devices, lift stations, grease traps, oil water separators, irrigation systems, etc.

  • Experience using a computer and Microsoft suite.

  • Ability to keep part inventory and maintain the shop vehicle.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and practices of the plumbing trade.

  • Knowledge of all applicable hazards and safety precautions.

  • Knowledge of all codes and ordinances.

  • Knowledge of basic building construction principles.

  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.

  • Skill in using plumbing tools and equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications.

  • Ability to work under minimum supervision.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.

  • Ability to analyze problems and determine appropriate course of action.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to temperature extremes, dust, dirt, grease, loud noises, or hazardous fumes.
