The Director, UX Design will be a key leader in the global Prime organization, responsible for envisioning and building an end-to-end customer experience that delights Amazon Prime members worldwide. From shopping in our stores to streaming content across devices to enjoying member-exclusive offers from trusted third parties on and offline, our members have high standards and deserve an integrated membership experience that is convenient, engaging, satisfying, and ultimately lovable. In this role you will develop and evangelize a north-star vision for how diverse benefits, content, and recommendations integrate to create an experience that our Prime members rely on to make every day better. You will generate and leverage diverse inputs such as user research, behavioral data, external inspiration, and promising new technologies, to execute and iteratively improve through customer-facing launches and subsequent learnings. You will work closely with product and engineering leadership to develop trajectory-bending ideas and deliver with excellence. You will develop a diverse team of world-class designers and researchers. You influence across multiple partner and local teams, drive mechanisms to connect those teams’ work into a single, holistic, end-to-end experience for our customers, and ensure a consistent, high bar for the Prime customer experience despite the federation of individual design decisions. You will play a leadership role in Amazon’s product development, up-leveling the aesthetic, usability, and delightfulness of CX.

The right candidate for this role has a proven track record of creating delightful and impactful global consumer experiences that are deeply rooted in user needs. You think big, imagining new growth opportunities through the lens of the functional and emotional benefits your customer experience can deliver. You have a high bar and routinely drive for excellence with an optimistic and collaborative approach that inspires your partners and team. You are adept at balancing visual, motion, and interaction design to create a delightful CX, and skilled at working in ambiguity to craft specific and actionable vision and design concepts. You have experience creating foundational design and customer experience systems that others can leverage to build specific experiences. You are a seasoned communicator, leveraging visual, written, and verbal communications to influence across all levels, including senior executives.

Key job responsibilities

• Raises the bar on design quality (never satisfied with status quo) with a team of strong design talent, but spends most of their time in the overarching portfolio’s design strategy, negotiating priorities, focus, and overall clarity of solution with cross-functional product and tech directors and general managers.

• Owns and drives the mechanisms used by the design team to work with multiple partners teams in order to get alignment on customer problems, product vision, and accurate priorities. Creates scalable systems that enable federation of design work

• Works proactively through the ambiguity of understanding customer needs, defining new products, and applying new technologies. Can bring structure to ambiguity or uncertainty. Ensure the resulting experiences are simple, clear, and compelling.

• Stays on the cutting edge of what’s new in technology and user experience, leading the team to identify and experiment with new promising tech and interaction patterns

• Maintains healthy relationships with partners and stakeholders in locations around the world; prioritizes well based on customer need, not internal interests; exhibits excellent judgment and negotiates challenging issues that result in moving the product forward

• Evangelizes initiatives to diverse audiences in both ad-hoc and formal presentations. Builds Prime’s standing as a preeminent consumer experience with external audiences.

• Inspires, leads, and develops a diverse team, creating a culture of inclusion and creativity.

• Contributes as a key leader to the Design Culture and Community at Amazon

Basic Qualifications

• 15+ years of experience as a user experience designer, interaction designer, product designer or similar role designing mobile, web, and/or other applications

• An online portfolio of work demonstrating experience creating great user-centered design solutions across desktop and mobile devices

• Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills

• Proven experience with rapid, iterative design and development processes

• Proven track record presenting to and influencing people, from other designers to senior executive management

• Experience leading projects in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team including designers, web developers, writers, product managers and software developers

• Fluency in best practices for multi-platform information architecture and design, as well as strong knowledge of usability principles and techniques

• Bachelor’s, or equivalent degree, in Design, HCI, or related field or equivalent professional experience within the design field

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience successfully leading and managing design teams of 20• Strong bias for action including the ability to juggle multiple priorities and effectively deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

• Be willing to roll up the sleeves to meet business and product deliverables

• Passion for the role of design within an organization and the ability to hire, develop and mentor design talent

• Design operations experience required to drive organizational design, product roadmaps, project planning, and resource prioritization

• Possess excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and analytical skills

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $216,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $322,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
