WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER The Eastern Ozarks Fire and Stewardship Coordinator's primary work location will be in Carter County, Missouri, but they will also assist in efforts on other natural areas in the eastern Ozarks and at times in other parts of the state. Mill Creek Preserve is an anchor location in the eastern Ozarks and is designated as a TNC Center for Conservation Innovation (CCI). This position will require strategic thinking, communications, and planning skills as well as the ability to work well with a team to establish and expand this location for science and stewardship efforts. Duties will include coordinating with conservation partners; leading seasonal and volunteer work teams to conduct prescribed fire, invasive species control, and habitat enhancement and restoration, tool and equipment maintenance, infrastructure repairs; and management planning for TNC preserves, state/federal lands, and priority private lands throughout southeast Missouri. Familiarity with various types of equipment including but not limited to chainsaws, larger pick-up trucks, tractors, trailers, fire equipment such as drip torches, water tanks, pumps, and herbicide handling equipment such as backpack and UTV-mounted spray tanks is required.The Eastern Ozarks Fire and Stewardship Coordinator will be TNC's representative in this region, working with private landowners, partners, and community stakeholders to engage them in conservation. They are expected to work together with conservation partners to set/assist in management goals/objectives and direct work teams to achieve those goals. The Coordinator will assist with the implementation of prescribed fire, mop-up and monitoring needs. They will consistently be increasing fire line leadership skills and qualifications over time towards the goal of becoming an NWCG RxB2 (Burn Boss). The Coordinator should also be trained on the safe application of herbicides to control invasive/non-native species and/or woody species that are impairing natural systems. Responsibilities will include: Making day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor and may work under infrequent supervision. Operating various types of equipment including (skid steers, tractors, mowers, chainsaw, etc.). Conducting boundary posting, mowing, tree and brush cutting, and weed mapping and treating. Conducting field tours, donor visits, and engage in community. Obtaining related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, and driver's license). GIS Mapping and reporting Serving as onsite research contact Taking an active role in prescribed fire ncluding but not limited to - planning, implementation, fire line leadership, etc. Vehicle and equipment record keeping and maintenance. Working in variable weather conditions, at a remote location, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets. Network with diverse groups, including landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and promote Conservancy programs/preserves. This position will require travel up to 25% of the time and on short notice and work flexible hours, often time being weather dependent. A high level of flexibility. WHAT YOU'LL BRING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and one year of related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in ecological land management principles. Must be qualified or have equivalent experience as a NWCG Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. https://www.nwcg.gov/positions/firefighter-type-2-crewmember/qualification-requirements Physically able to pass the NWCG Arduous Pack test (walking 3 miles in under 45 minutes with a 45 lb. pack). Experience operating and repairing various types of equipment and machinery. . DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS 1 - 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. Qualified or have equivalent experience as a NWCG Firefighter Type 1 (or higher). Natural resource and recreational knowledge of the eastern Ozarks region. Experience in written and verbal communications to diverse audiences and comfortable speaking to individuals or groups. Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities. Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field. Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timelines. Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.: Word, Excel, Web browsers).
