Schnabel Engineering Senior Geotechnical Engineer in Rockville, Maryland

Job Description:

Schnabel Engineering is searching for an experienced senior-level Geotechnical Engineer to lead some of our most challenging and complex projects. The ideal candidate will have a breadth of consulting experience in the design and construction of large civil engineering projects, particularly in the transportation market, but also in Federal, water/wastewater, commercial development, and other markets. You will be expected to demonstrate a strong technical knowledge of the principles of soil mechanics, have extensive experience with geotechnical design and project management, and have the ability to effectively work within a multi-disciplinary team. Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead project teams responsible for subsurface explorations, engineering analyses and calculations, developing engineering recommendations, and consulting with engineering and construction clients for a variety of complex projects.

  • Research and resolve design and construction problems by applying sound engineering principles.

  • Assign, review, and evaluate laboratory or field data for inclusion in analysis and reports.

  • Supervise and perform geotechnical engineering analysis and calculations including deep and shallow foundations, rock and soil slope stability and stabilization, retaining walls, tieback anchors, temporary support of excavation, roadways and pavements, groundwater modeling, earthwork, subgrade preparation and stabilization, soil-structure interactions, etc.

  • Prepare, review, and supervise development of geotechnical engineering recommendations, geotechnical engineering reports, and technical memoranda.

  • Effectively consult with technical and non-technical clients and project teams to communicate complex engineering concepts to implement design recommendations during the design and construction phase of projects.

  • Review construction plans and specifications to assure compliance with design and recommendations.

  • Provide senior technical review and oversight for projects.

  • Supervise and mentor less experienced engineers.

  • Lead technical training and make informed decisions based upon state-of-the-art technology and engineering methods.

  • Develop geotechnical engineering scope of services and fee estimates.

  • Perform project management activities including communicating resource needs, managing client expectations, planning and delegating work, management of project budgets, invoicing and backlog reporting.

  • Manage client relationships and business development opportunities.

  • Work as a team member within the geotechnical engineering department and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering.

  • Experience managing project budgets and schedules, preparing geotechnical engineering reports and proposals, and consulting with clients and contractors.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Maryland or the ability to obtain through reciprocity.

  • Proficiency with standard geotechnical engineering analysis software such as LPILE, APILE and SHAFT, PLAXIS, GeoStudio Slope/W, Seep/W, and Sigma/W, Settle3D, FoSSA, Mathcad. Shoring Suite, Slide, gINT, or similar programs.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a demonstrated focus on interdisciplinary design coordination and coordination between Engineering and Construction.

  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement.

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.

  • Confidence and independence, ability to multi-task, and a shared sense of responsibility.

  • Proven experience as a Seller-Doer with strong client relationships, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a track record of generating new work and growing a business segment will command a greater salary.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering.

  • Experience with design-build or progressive design-build projects.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check.

  • Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs.

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
