A day in the life of a Geotechnical Principal Engineer at NTH

  • Prepare and/or review technical proposals, cost estimates, plans/drawings, technical specifications, and reports.
  • Perform and/or review a variety of engineering analyses and calculations, with and without the use of engineering software.
  • Coordinate field observations and studies, including on-site direction of geotechnical drilling activities, as needed.
  • Coordinate construction quality control services, conduct periodic site visits, and review daily field reports prepared by others.
  • Review geotechnical report prepared by others.
  • Interact and communicate with subcontractors, clients, and internal staff.
  • Lead, mentor, oversee, and/or supervise junior staff.
  • Develop as needed geotechnical training program for junior staff professionals.
  • Support business development and marketing activities.
  • Develop and present project-specific or technical presentations to clients, technical organizations, and in-house staff.
  • Actively participate in relationship building opportunities with clients and professional organizations.

     

What you need to apply

Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering (emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering preferred) from a 4-year accredited college or university.

  • Master of Science degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.

Professional licensure in the State of Michigan or another state required.

10+ years of demonstrated experience in Geotechnical Engineering analysis, design, and project management.

Excellent skills in geotechnical applications and soil-structure interaction.

Experience with software for geotechnical analysis and design of slope stability, earth retention / shoring, settlement, vertical and lateral loading of shallow and deep foundations, and related items is necessary.

Experience with soft soil conditions and finite element modeling is highly desirable.

Ability to independently characterize subsoil conditions, starting from development of an exploration program through laboratory testing, evaluation of data, and design parameter recommendations.

Experience in analysis and design of earth support systems is highly desirable.

Experience in various tunneling techniques is a plus.

Dam-related services experience including seepage, stability, and piping analysis, instrumentation and monitoring, engineering evaluation, and construction inspection and administration is a plus.

Leadership experience in mentoring and leading junior staff.

Ability to organize technical material into comprehensive reports as well as perform QA/QC reviews on work product is required.

Ability to perform project planning, task delegation, and management to ensure project is completed according to work plans.
