Advanced Practice Provider - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse/ Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
Provide, assist and promote exceptional care of surgical patients on the ambulatory and short-stay inpatient service and in the Operating Room at the new Northwest Houston Surgical and Specialty Care center . Provide advanced direct and indirect care patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development, and other identified needs. This position provides quality direct and/or indirect patient care clinically, administratively and/or academically. The duties of this position are carried out in accordance with policies established by the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and consistent with the Texas State licensure requirements.
Shift: Day/Evening. On call rotation (remote availability)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Patient Care. Functions as a clinical advanced practice provider, as licensed, 95% of the time. Must otherwise maintain licensure and continuing education as dictated by the providers license and clinical appointment.
Inpatient (ambulatory and short-stay surgeries): Receives daily sign out from fellows and PAs regarding patient care issues to follow up on during the day. Rounding on all first assist cases and follow up on any issues with patients on the floor. Communicate in a timely fashion all physical findings and other pertinent information regarding the patient to attending and associated medical staff. Ensure appropriate hand offs to next level of care staff.
OR: Manage pre-operative and post-operative patients in coordination with the Faculty supervising physician. Possess an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology of both cancer as well as the surgical process and wound healing as necessary.
Obtain history and physical examinations for peri-operative care of surgical patients.
Formulate an assessment and plan; order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests in coordination with faculty Supervising Physician.
Effectively communicate with patient-specific reviews of procedure, exam findings, post-operative care, anticipatory guidance and education. This requires excellent interpersonal skills, an appreciation of language and cultural differences, as well as a clear, strong voice and good command of the English language.
Ability to perform as a surgical first-assist as needed, requiring above-average manual dexterity for appropriate surgical performance. The use of a scalpel, electric knife, surgical instruments, robotic surgical instruments, sterile technique, and compliance with operating room rules and regulations are necessary. Trained observational skills are critical.
Ability to perform minor surgical procedures which may include wound closure, wound debridement, suture/staple removal, drain placement or removal, seroma evacuation, biopsies, and other procedures as delegated by the supervising physician.
Understanding of One-Connect electronic medical record system.
Other functions include research and education, etc.
EDUCATION
Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
Preferred:
At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role. Prior experience in Oncology setting.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Required: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
