Job Summary

The Staff Attorney is responsible for advising Tribal Council and executives on all Tribal legal and sovereign matters. Understands thoroughly and abides by the Tribe's stated purpose, values, mission and vision under the directives of the Executive Director and Tribal Council.

Essential Functions

  • Creates legal reports, correspondence and provides legal guidance and support to Tribal Council and executives
  • Develops the Tribe's policies on Health Care-specific issues, Tribal governance or regulatory affairs and ensures compliance regarding Health Care regulations
  • Manages general litigation and responds to legal complaints, inquiries from regulatory agencies, Tribal Members, customers (un'ina) and the business community.
  • Negotiates, writes and executes agreements and contracts on behalf of the Tribe
  • Prepares, reviews and negotiates Tribal contracts, requests for proposals, contractual agreements, such as real estate leases and other legal document
  • Advises on contract status, legal risks, and legal liabilities associated with different agreements
  • Researches and anticipates unique legal issues that could impact the Tribe
  • Reviews advertising and marketing materials to ensure compliance with legal requirements
  • Advises on employment matters and providing training to the Tribe on legal topics
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

  • Sedentary work- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met

Qualifications

Education

  • Must have a Juris Doctor degree(J.D.) from a recognized university

Experience

  • Five years (5) of experience gained in a law firm and/or in-house with major firm
  • Strong negotiating skills with both legal and financial/commercial issues

License/Certification

  • Must be admitted to a recognized bar
  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire, or, with approval of the hiring manager, sign a *Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in lieu of having a driver's license to perform the required duties of the posit on (If Applicable)

Preferred

  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
  • Knowledge and experience working with ANCSA corporations and Alaska Tribes

Special Skills

  • Excellent analytical, communication, diplomatic, research and writing skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others

*Memorandum of Understanding:Serves as documented evidence that the Kenaitze Indian Tribe has expressed the ineligibility of an employee to operate motor vehicles owned, leased or rented by the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, or to operate a personal vehicle on behalf of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe.

Preference shall be given to eligible qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.
