The Role

BGC is seeking a Senior to Principal Geotechnical or Geological Engineer to act as or transition to Engineer of Record (EOR) for tailings storage facilities, with a potential focus on facilities in northern regions. The successful candidate will perform technical lead, Deputy EOR, or EOR duties during the design, construction, and operation of new greenfield or existing tailings storage facilities. The candidate will be supported by an existing multi-disciplinary team of geotechnical/geological engineers, geoscientists, hydrologists, hydrogeologists

?This position can be based at any BGC office in Canada or the United States.

Responsibilities

The scope of work overseen by the EOR will include site investigation planning and execution, foundation characterization for geotechnical design, assessment of hazards and failure modes, stability analyses, development of construction drawings and specifications, construction oversight and quality assurance, response to contractor and client requests for information, dam safety inspections, instrumentation data review, and records reporting. Other responsibilities include:

?Work in a multi-disciplinary team related to the performance of tailings storage facilities. ?Annual inspections and reporting (DSIs, etc.). Present technical content to various stakeholders including clients, regulators, and independent technical review boards. ?Advise the Accountable Executive and work with the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer. ?Other Engineer of Record duties as required by standards, guidelines, regulations and/or the facility owner. Train, mentor, and supervise technical work of junior, intermediate, and senior staff. ?Help promote BGC vision, values, and culture amongst BGC staff. ?Travel as required, which could occasionally include extended shifts at remote work sites and visits to North American BGC offices.

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

Demonstrated competency and experience working in tailings management for the responsibilities noted above. Undergraduate degree in Civil or Geological Engineering. ?Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada or the United States. 15+ years of relevant work experience in tailings management, dam design, or mining geotechnique. Current knowledge of applicable regulations, including the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and other relevant guidelines and standards. Strong leadership, analytical, project management, and communication skills. A commitment to technical excellence. Proven effective communication skills (verbal and written). ?Experienced in all phases of large tailings projects: investigation, design, construction, operations, and losure.

Preferred Education, Experience & Competencies

Post-graduate degree in Geological, Geotechnical, or Civil Engineering. 2+ years of experience in cold climate dam engineering. 2+ years of experience in the and construction of structures founded on permafrost. Ability and willingness to become registered as a Professional Engineer in Alaska or the Northwest Territories and Yukon, within six months of hire. A commitment to innovation.
