This orientation will provide the apprentice with a full overview of the expectations of the apprentice program including the on-the-job training component and related instruction, recordkeeping requirements and communication.

Apprentices will meet with the Apprentice Training Director for 9 weeks of instruction each semester. Period 1 instruction will include an introduction to wastewater systems, rules and regulations, operator ethics and safety related topics.

This course introduces to water and wastewater operators the method used in determining a confined space and it explains proper steps to take in protecting operators who have to work in such conditions. Covered will be the hazards encountered in confined spaces that are capable of causing bodily injury, illness and even death. Upon completion of this course, students will understand: the definition of a confined space, the difference between a confined space and a permit - required confined space, categories of confined space, importance and order of atmospheric testing, ventilation requirements, duties of each member of the confined space entry team, and required safety equipment for confined space.

First Aid: Participants learn first aid skills for treating a variety of injuries such as burns; wounds; head, neck and back injuries; and heat and cold related emergencies. Participants also learn to manage sudden illnesses, stroke, seizure, bites and poisoning. Adult CPR: Participants learn how to perform CPR and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults. This course also explains the role of AEDs in emergency cardiac care.

This is a comprehensive safety course for water utility workers, which includes an introduction to safety concepts and programs.

Elective credits can be earned through attendance to conferences, expos, general and advanced training courses offered to general membership, outside training events (with approval from Apprentice Coordinator). Costs and offerings will vary by semester.
