Hourly Rate: $18.90 -$20.05

Locations: Lake Michie and Little River Lake

Shifts Vary; Friday - Monday between the hours of 6:00 am – 6:00 pm during the lakes s eason (March – November); with 10-15 hours per week in the off-season.

Join Durham Parks and Recreation's mission to bring our residents out on the water for fun and enriching recreation experiences. If you have skills in canoeing, kayaking, and/or boating in general and are looking for plenty of weekend hours during our operating season and some downtime over the winter months, this could be a great opportunity for you. We need a leader to oversee our City lakes (Lake Michie and Little River Lake) who has good judgment and skill in ensuring customer safety, caring for equipment, responsible cash handling, and record keeping. This staff member will supervise all lake activity, lead and train our lake attendants, provide paddling instruction, and assist with paddling events that we offer to the public throughout the season. Various kinds of prior experience can demonstrate the soft skills needed to excel in this role. If you have developed your boating and paddling skills as a hobbyist on your own time, we are interested in what you have to offer -- professional work experience in the field is a plus, but not required! Position assists with the daily operation of the two City Lakes by opening and closing facilities, assisting customers, processing permits, keeping inventories, and maintaining equipment, as well as providing support during the off season. Incumbent promotes safety standards and provides general oversight of lake customers and facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supervises lake users in a variety of water-based recreation activities.

  • Enforces regulations and monitors weather to determine when conditions are unfavorable for lake activities according to established guidelines.

  • Maintains order and discipline, advises supervisor of violations or safety concerns.

  • Issues and collects equipment, addresses potential safety hazards with equipment and its use.

  • Maintains and inventories equipment, performs basic repairs on motors.

  • Issues lake access permits to customers and accepts payments.

  • Enters and updates user information and registrations in Active.Net recreation software system.

  • Assists with training of new lake attendants, provides continued support to new staff as needed.

  • Assists in coordinating interactive workshops, special events, and programs.

  • Maintains activity and attendance records, incident reports, and other program documents.

  • Addresses customer and staff or volunteer needs and concerns and communicates them to supervisor.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training programs, orientations, and evaluation sessions.

  • Completes program and staff evaluation forms.

  • Renders first aid in case of minor injury.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Group recreational supervision.

  • Communicating clearly and precisely with the public.

  • Organizing and instructing a specialty area.

  • Comfortably working on water and in an outdoor setting.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC).

  • Two (2) years of experience in outdoor recreation or a related field, and experience with water-based activities.

  • A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

  • A valid Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED – with Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification within the first six months of employment.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Experience with cash handling and/or customer service.

  • Experience with paddle instruction (Canoe/Kayak).

  • Experience with boat maintenance.
