About the Opportunity

Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Geoscientific Modelling Consultant to join our Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal business. The role can be based at Harwell, London, Birchwood or other locations will be considered. The successful applicant will be part of a multi-disciplinary team (including chemists, physicists, geologists, engineers, safety case specialists and mathematicians) to deliver a range of projects on behalf of UK-based and international customers.

Our Waste Management, Disposal and Safety Case teams have led the field of research and assessment work related to the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste, for over 30 years. The team has a wide breadth of both nationally and internationally respected expertise to provide consultancy, modelling, safety case and laboratory studies to underpin the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe disposal of radioactive waste.

You will be involved in delivering an exciting and diverse range of consultancy projects for our customers in the UK and overseas. The successful candidates will focus on the development of a range of models associated with the disposal of radioactive wastes, including numerical and other models for the safety assessment of geological disposal facilities. You will also have the opportunity to provide support to other decommissioning projects.

Key Responsibilities:

You will work on a range of consultancy projects for customers including radioactive waste producers, radioactive waste management organisations and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. This will include a wide variety of activities across the areas of radioactive waste management and geological disposal, including:

  • Provision of input to a range of technical areas; including numerical modelling, and other forms of simple and complex modelling used to underpin the safety of geological disposal facilities.

  • Production of technical reports and presentations that effectively communicate detailed scientific data to non-specialists.

  • Developing an understanding of the underlying requirements of our customers, and how we can meet those requirements.

  • Analysing problems and developing solutions.

  • Delivering work to agreed timescales.

  • Supporting other team members with business development activities.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • A postgraduate degree in Earth sciences, physical sciences, an engineering discipline or mathematics.

  • Experience in the development and application of numerical models.

  • Technically able, with a demonstrable track record of creative problem solving.

  • Flexible, innovative and keen to develop skills.

  • Adaptable and able to work on a variety of projects, prioritising as appropriate.

  • Able to work in multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Enthusiasm to apply skills to the solution of real-world problems.

The following are not essential but we welcome applications from candidates who have any of the following experience:

  • A PhD in Earth sciences, physical sciences, an engineering discipline or mathematics.

  • Experience of using GoldSim to simulate contaminant transport through complex geological settings.

  • Experience of using PHREEQC to model chemical interactions in cementitious environments, to determine chemical parameters for contaminants and/or to model contaminant transport.

  • Experience of scientific programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB).

  • Ability to develop and apply a range of software tools used for coupled geological modelling (e.g., COMSOL, PFLOTRAN).

  • Experience of geotechnical modelling, including rock mechanics modelling.

  • Ability to visualise 3D systems.
